MINISTRY TO THE EMMAUS COMMUNITY

We are committed to pastorally care for the residents living in the Emmaus Community.  A Pastoral Team meets with the residents during the year and a Christmas party is held in Emmaus Park for all residents and also members of our church. Our congregation donate gifts to all the Emmaus children and Santa visits the children with a gift for each of them and a barbecue is supplied by the church.

What is  “Emmaus”?
The “Emmaus Community” is a community housing complex  located in Bayswater North and is a ministry of South Croydon Anglican  Church. It is operated in partnership with Jubilee Housing Inc, an experienced tenancy management ministry initiated by Box Hill Baptist and  New Hope Baptist churches.  It is a not-for-profit venture and financially is separate from South Croydon Anglican Church.
”Emmaus” comprises 19 single and double-storey units of affordable housing, and a large park area.  Applicants must be on the Office  of Housing waiting list.  “Emmaus” has some 50 residents from a variety of cultures  and backgrounds, including young families and singles, elderly people and  refugees.  This mix gives a true community environment.  Residents are also offered support by the South Croydon Anglican Church Emmaus Pastoral Care Team as mentioned previously.

A Brief History of the Emmaus ministry
In 1981 the people of South Croydon Anglican Church felt  the Lord was leading them to purchase six and a half acres of land near the church.  The vision was to provide a healing, caring environment for those in particular need in the community.

An incorporated body was set up to manage the land and  facilitate the vision.  In 2003 a joint venture with an ecumenical housing group harnessed State government  funding which enabled the construction of the 19 unit affordable housing complex.   The development from vision to reality has been an amazing journey for the  relatively small congregation and it has been exciting to work alongside other churches and Christian agencies to be able to meet acute social housing needs in a timely fashion.
